AHOY! FOUND FUNDRAISER FOR ALGALITA MARINE RESEARCH FOUNDATION!

The Found is proud to present a fundraising performance of “Dirty, Rotten Pirates” as a fundraiser for the Algalita Marine Research Foundation (AMRF), a Long Beach-based non-profit organization dedicated to the protection of the marine environment through research, education and restoration. If you’re aware of the plastic mess in the middle of the Pacific Ocean (the Pacific Garbage Patch), it’s because of the work of Captain Charles Moore and AMRF. Join us for a performance of the Found’s hilarious new show, “Dirty, Rotten Pirates,” followed by Captain Moore speaking about his next voyage to monitor the levels of plastic in the ocean. Refreshments will be provided.

Saturday, June 6, 8:00 p.m.

Tickets: $20 (100% of proceeds to AMRF)

This production sponsored in part by the Arts Council for Long Beach, the City of Long Beach, and CapitalSource Bank.

A SHORT HISTORY OF THE FOUND

Small, experimental theatres have a remarkably short shelf life, often owing to lack of money, poor management of financial resources, uncontained egos, and even the dreaded “artistic differences.” For The Found to survive for 35 years is a testament to the generosity and perseverance of its company members and loyal supporters...and to the genius, passion and resourcefulness of its founder and artistic director, Cynthia Galles.
In 1974, Galles and a small band of fellow UCI graduates produced their first show in a Long Beach church, then “found” a small space of their own at the corner of 7th & Orange. When that was razed to make way for progress (Domino’s Pizza and a 99 cent store), the expanding family of Foundlings moved to a space on 7th St. near Long Beach Blvd., where they thrived artistically for 20 years. It was always Cynthia’s dream to have more performance and storage space, plus high ceilings to accommodate better lighting, and after 10 years of working tirelessly with the City of Long Beach, its Redevelopment Agency and Arts Council, that dream was borne out in a brand-new space in CityPlace, made possible by the City’s progressive “One Percent For Arts” program. As icing on the cake, the brilliant Garage Theatre company took over our old home on 7th St., allowing us and the community to continue experiencing great live theatre there.

Sadly, for us and the entire artistic community, Cynthia never really had the opportunity to explore the limitless possibilities of our new space. Soon after the move in December 2004, she was rediagnosed with cancer, and in spite of one of the most courageous battles anyone has ever waged, passed away in November 2005 with far too many creative endeavors left undone. Cynthia was truly the magic and the driving force behind the Found, but the entire Found company stepped up to fill her enormous shoes. She continues to inspire and energize us with her life-long vision of creating “fine live theatre with a social conscience and a sense of humor.” We hope you’ll join us for some of our 2009 events celebrating Cynthia and our first 35 years.
